USD 490 students raise nearly $3,500 for United Way
USD 490 hosted Pennies by the Pound week October 29 through November 2 to raise money for United Way. Students raised $3,473.77 from the various contests and activities.
EHS collected pennies for their annual Pennies by the Inch competition and raised $739.07. They also sponsored a costume event that raised $64.65 and a movie night that raised $141, for an EHS total donation of $944.72.
From November 5-9 EMS offered a tiered incentive for donations. On Monday, students received a granola bar for their pennies. On Tuesday, they received Skittles for their nickels. On Wednesday, they received Takis for their dimes. On Thursday, they received a pack of gum for their quarters. On Friday, they received candy and sunglasses for donations of a dollar or more. The total raised was $1,504.
The elementary schools made donations a competition to see which classroom could collect the most weight in pennies. At the end of the week, they had 509 pounds of pennies, totaling $1025.05. With a hefty 95 pounds, Mrs. Cogan's class won at Blackmore. The classroom winner at Grandview was Mrs. Smith's class with 37 pounds. At Skelly, Mrs. Lee's class won with 37 pounds.
The money raised benefits local families through programs such as 12 Baskets, Inc., Big Brothers Big Sisters of Butler County, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Bradford Memorial Library, Rainbows: Bright Beginnings, El Dorado Crime Stoppers, El Dorado LunchBox: KN2E, El Dorado Meals on Wheels, El Dorado Safe House, SCARF, The Salvation Army, and Tri-County CASA.
