New USD 490 Superintendent search underway
Current Superintendent Sue Givens announced her intent to retire during the October Board of Education meeting, and USD 490 has begun the Superintendent Search process with the assistance of the Kansas Association of School Boards. The first step is seeking feedback from the community about what characteristics they feel are important for the leader of our public schools.

On October 30, an online survey was released to collect that valuable input. Staff, parents, and community members can access the survey by clicking on this link: The survey will close on November 14.

“This is one of the most important decisions the Board of Education will make,” Norm Wilks, BOE President said. “We want the community to have an opportunity to suggest the skills and characteristics that will be vital in our next Superintendent.”

On November 12, the board will meet to discuss what they are looking for in the next Superintendent and prepare for the next steps in the process.

Candidate application packets are due to KASB by December 7. Those packets can be accessed on the KASB website:

The KASB screening committee will meet with the Board of Education on December 10 to narrow the candidate pool to three to five applicants and establish a timeline for interviews. Those interviews and candidate receptions will take place from December 11 – 18.

The Board of Education will select the next Superintendent after the interviews and vetting of candidates.

The new Superintendent-elect will have the opportunity to be involved in important decisions regarding the district throughout the spring semester, but will not officially begin working for USD 490 until July 1, 2019.
