Elementary students send Valentine's to army trainees

Blackmore Special Education Teacher Carol Moore partnered with Elementary Art Teacher Tiffany Harris to help students create Valentine's Day cards for trainees on Fort Jackson army base in South Carolina.

During the month of January, elementary students created 800 Valentine cards. Some cards feature pop-up hearts, others are flag-themed, but all express appreciation for service members.

Mrs. Moore began sending letters to army trainees while her grandson, EHS graduate Sylver Morgan, was stationed at Fort Jackson. Although Morgan graduated basic in September, Mrs. Moore continued to send letters to the other trainees.

"While Sylver was there, I found out that many trainees never receive a single letter from home while they are in training," Mrs. Moore said.

Trainees can't receive care packages or anything that contains glitter, so Mrs. Moore writes letters. She sends anywhere from 70-140 letters each month and sent cards at Christmas.

Students created enough Valentine cards to send one to each trainee in the battalion and Mrs. Moore plans to mail them in time for Valentine's Day.
