On Dec. 10, EMS 8th grade students attended a financial literacy event sponsored by Communities In Schools. The FutureNow: Finance event is a hands-on program offered by Communities In Schools of Mid-America and staffed by volunteers including local business professionals and students from EHS DECA and KAY clubs.
Each EMS student received a profile describing their potential life as a 26-year-old. They were assigned jobs with salaries, families, homes and shopping habits. The students were then challenged to make ends meet using their salaries to purchase all the necessities of life such as child care, transportation, food, housing, utilities, etc., plus budget for non-essentials like vacations.
The event is designed to help students make wise financial decisions in the future. CIS Site Coordinator, Randy Just, said, “If they don’t have the knowledge, it’s easy for them to get into dangerous situations, accumulate debt, use predatory loans, etc. We want to help the students know what to expect and keep them out of financial difficulty in the near future.”
